Elaine Constantine - Photographer
Elaine Constantine was born in Bury, Greater Manchester, and it was at Bury Camera Club that she learnt the skills that led to her working as an apprentice to Nick Knight in London and becoming a photographer herself. As a pioneer of the vibrant, documentary-inspired approach to fashion photography in the 1990s and early 2000s, Constantine offered a joyous alternative to the gloomy grunge aesthetic and was soon a regular contributor to The Face. Shes renowned for her ecstatic, colourful portrayal of British youth culture, and Anna Wintour has described her as one of the most talented fashion photographers of her generation.
Constantines work is essentially about ordinary people enjoying themselves, and 2014 saw the release of her most ambitious project to date Northern Soul, a loving celebration of the late 1960s and 1970s dance movement that saw rare American soul music sweeping through the nightclubs of Northern England. Starring Josh Whitehouse, Elliott James Langridge, Steve Coogan and Lisa Stansfield the film was a surprise box office hit and was nominated for BAFTAs Outstanding Debut award.
Elaine Constantine has contributed to The Face, i-D, W Magazine and French, Italian and US Vogue, and her commercial clients have included Vivienne Westwood, Diesel and Burberry. Her photographs are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London and have been exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Tate Britain and the Photographers Gallery. Constantine has won various awards, most notably the Terrence Donovan Achievement Award from the Royal Photographic Society in 2005.
