Melissa Ventosa Martin - Fashion Director of Self Magazine
Jun 20, 2014
Joyce Chang continues to put together her dream team at Self magazine, where she was appointed editor in chief in May. It's the latest Conde Nast title to go through the Anna Wintour-approved revamp other magazines like Lucky and Glamour have already experienced.
A spokesperson for Self confirms that Chang's latest hire is Melissa Ventosa Martin, who replaces Evyan Metzner as fashion director of the glossy. Metzner was let go by Chang in May after 10 years with the magazine.
Ventosa Martin joins the team from sister publication Glamour, where she has served as style director since 2010; previously, she worked at T, The New York Times Style Magazine as its fashion market director and fashion editor.
Chang indicates to WWD that the hire means Self will be taking fashion more seriously. "I want fashion to feel very much part of a readers life, which it is," she says. "We want to elevate Self in the content and in the tone."
Ventosa Martin's hire is effective June 30.

Quote:
Ingrid Sischy Dies at 63 Ingrid Sischy, 63, former editor in chief of Interview and a highly regarded writer on pop culture, art, fashion, entertainment and celebrity, died Friday morning at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The cause of death was breast cancer, according to her friend, Ed Filipowski. One of the admired editors in the fashion and art worlds, Sischy was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland. She got her start in the art world as editor of Art Forum from 1979 to 1987, which was a major influence in the pioneering of established and new artists. She also brought many female artists to the forefront. Sischy was a photography and fashion critic of the New Yorker from 1998 to 1996, where some of her milestone pieces were on Robert Mapplethorpe at the height of the AIDS crisis and the Corcoran cancellation and the first profiles on Miuccia Prada, Alexander McQueen and Azzedine Alaia. She served as editor of Interview from 1989 to 1998 with her partner, Interview president and publisher Sandra Brant. The duo created a chronicle of pop culture in the Eighties and Nineties that blended art, fashion, entertainment and celebrity through high-profile interviews and photography. In 1997, Sischy became a contributing editor at Vanity Fair and penned cover stories about Madonna, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart, as well as major features on John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Keith Haring, Jeff Koons and Jean Michel Basquiat. She also was an international editor of Conde Nast International with Brant since 2008, contributing to German Vogue, French Vanity Fair, Spanish Vanity Fair and Italian Vanity Fair. In addition to her spouse Brant, she is survived by her mother Claire and brother David Sischy. Donations may be made in Sischys memory to the Studio Museum in Harlem and City Critters of New York. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. |

Gisele Zelauy
Quote:
Gisele Zelauy was born in 1967, in Brazil. Although she was raised in Sao Paulo, she lived in Europe for seven years to pursue her modeling career and currently lives in West Hollywood. She was photographed by Richard Avedon for the Pirelli Calendar (1997), Giorgio Armani called her his favorite model and Moschino called her the new look of the 90s. Her secret to her success comes from being herself and having fun while she is. Whatever the reason, the International fashion world fell head over heels for her. Between a successful career and family, Zelauy had a difficult time choosing between life goals. When Gisele was a little girl in Brazil, she had two dreams of ambition: to be a successful model, then a successful writer. Her talent and determination simply demanded it. "She achieved supermodel status, and about her writing, there are very few works that have given me the surprises, loud laughs and appreciation for her natural psychology and turns of phrase as has Gisele's," confirmed her agent, Tom Dark (Heacock Hill Agency). Competitive, driven, and passionate about her beliefs, she enjoys a good discussion, refuses to take herself too seriously, and is often accused of being a soap-opera-drama-seeker. She is intelligent, eccentric, and blunt -- but as some say, the first superstar from Brazil. That's a video of the author, Gisele Zelauy, storming the fashion world in Europe, Brazil and New York. She earned the affectionate nickname, "Zelauy" (pr. za-LOWIE) in fashion and entertainment periodicals internationally. Zelauy is first recognized internationally for her contribution working with Karl Lagerfeld as muse for Maison Chanel. |

Giwa Huang

Quote:
Who: Giwa (Chi Yun) Huang, 175 / 59″, Taiwanese, born August 2nd. Why: Giwas look veers from criminally cute to staggeringly sultry, so this Taiwanese tigress brings plenty of pow. Discovered at a model contest in Taipei, Giwa completed her studies before giving fashion her complete attention though that hasnt stopped her from working for Vogue Taiwan, Marie Claire, and Elle. A hip hop head who loves Kanye West, musical Giwa plays the guitar, and has plenty of passion for fashion, especially when it comes to Alexander Wang. Briefly in NY last Autumn, Giwa has recently been in Milan, working on her portfolio. Planning on returning to New York and Europe for the show season, anyone who gets to meet this gem from Treasure Island (as Taiwan is known colloquially in Mandarin) is in for a treat. Fashion & Veganism
Hi there!
Veganism has become fashionable in recent years - it's almost a bit of cliché now. However, I guess many followers of this trend have been rather concerned with a healthy diet and were not really driven by ethical motivations. Or do you think there is also growing interest in vegan fashion, i.e. replacing leather, wool, silk etc. with good quality materials not of animal origin? What are your thoughts?
***Edited*** Please post this survey in Careers & Education. Thanks!
