CWST Mens S/S 2016 New York

Derek Buse and Joe Sadler made the move from the sandy beach to the arid desert of Death Valley for their CWST collection this season. The tight 12-piece lineup centered around textures and novelty fabrics, such as an indigo Japanese seersucker that the duo fashioned into a playful suit with shorts and three-quarter-length sleeves.

Even though they left the beach lifestyle behind, the relaxed lounge attitude remained and worked best when applied to the more-tailored pieces. When used with athletic references, the message got diluted and predictable.

The graphic prints that originated during the Bauhaus movement in the Twenties and Thirties in Germany were the overriding visual elements for David Hart’s spring collection.

The designer continued to shine with his tailored clothing offering, which this season centered around the use of summer fabrics including Irish linen, and super 130s merino wool. While the single-breasted style remained body-conscious, the double-breasted model was boxier, which Hart said was intended to look “more intimidating.”

In seasons past, he concentrated on Hawaiian and atomic prints, but this time out, geometrics ruled and they worked best on lightweight wool cardigans, Italian silk shirts and woven tuxedo blazers.

Reflections of natural light on aluminum structures as envisioned by artist Dan Flavin at a Texas fluorescent installation was the vision for Carlos Garciavelez’s spring collection. The designer translated this into a subtle blurring of light through the use of variations in neon color and gradation.

In terms of silhouettes, athletic references were seen throughout in hybrid hooded blazers in nylon and chambray, expandable ribbing on the shoulder of blazers to allow for movement, and cropped sweatshirts layered over neon-colored tees. These bright combinations were also used in a footwear collaboration with Diemme.

“Wake Up” by rock band Arcade Fire was the springboard for Jaewan Park’s youthful collection, which featured classic sportswear with subtle athletic and military references. Short-sleeved sweatshirts were styled over shirts, and T-shirts displayed graphics derived from the vibration of sound. The outerwear hit a high note. A classic trenchcoat made from Japanese waterproof fabric was freshened up with a white collar, while shirtlike cuffs brought an unexpected touch to a lightweight bomber jacket. Denim was clean and raw with inverted contrast cuffs and a subtle camo print.

Although this is only his second time showing in New York City, Park, who started Plac as a denim brand, has a hefty retail presence in Asia with 80 stores in South Korea and five stores in China. He plans to open a New York City store later this year. The sportswear aesthetic may play well at retail, but it’s not moving the needle when it comes to designer trends.

In a season where utility and vintage military references are overriding trends, Cadet felt of the moment.

A belted breathable polyester motorcycle utility jacket paired with a tonal minimalistic cargo pant, a merino wool jumpsuit and a digitally printed micro camouflage short with matching jacket were the highlights and embodied the key aesthetic of the collection.

The introduction of accessories and jewelry, such as a belted munitions pouch worn with a lightweight cotton deconstructed suit, added a sophisticated touch to an up-and-coming brand.

Opening Ceremony Mens S/S 2016 New York

“We wanted to focus on all things we love in our wardrobes but mashed up.”
That was the way Humberto Leon summed up the spring collection of Opening Ceremony, the brand he runs with Carol Lim.
That translated into an innovative take on basics such as T-shirts, classic dress shirts and shorts, all of which were intentionally crumbled and wrinkled — and often resulted in a double-take. For instance, the “concert” T-shirts weren’t for David Bowie or the Rolling Stones, but for Peter Tchaikovsky and Johann Sebastian Bach. The jackets sported Velcro patches that said “symphony” or “concerto” and could be removed and customized on different pieces within the line.
A ribbed tank top was offered as a knit sweater, the dress shirt was in an airy mesh, and the railroad stripes were used for an anorak top and oversize shorts. “We’re playing around with the idea of shirts,” Leon said.
Since its founding in 2002, Opening Ceremony has been spot-on with its youthful take on sportswear basics for the ultimate cool kid, and this season is no exception.

We'll be seeing a lot of her by the end of the year, so it makes sense to start a thread. I'm kind of getting a Keira Knightley vibe from her.

Tommy Hilfiger F/W 2015.16: Behati Prinsloo by Craig McDean

To mark his 30th anniversary, Tommy Hilfiger turned to all-American football, with a fall runway replete with goal posts, scoreboards and yard lines. The designer’s fall ad campaign takes the theme a step further, featuring “The Hilfigers” surrounded by football players wearing their uniforms.

Dubbed “Team Hilfiger,” the campaign was photographed by Craig McDean and styled by Karl Templer. It was creatively directed by Trey Laird of Laird+Partners.

Photographed in Monterey Park, Calif., the campaign features model Behati Prinsloo, and depicts a cast of characters from previous campaigns: Julia Hafstrom, RJ King and Miles McMillan, with new additions Bruno Fabre, Nate Gill and Simon Nessman.

The campaign breaks worldwide on Aug. 3, with a multimedia program that includes print, traditional display and social media. Exclusive clips from the behind-the-scenes video with Prinsloo will be released via social media direct message to the model’s fans and followers before being shared over the Hilfiger social channels. The print ads will run in September issues, with cover gatefolds and double pages in magazines such as Vogue, Elle, Vanity Fair, InStyle, Marie Claire, Glamour and Harper’s Bazaar.

The ads break at a transitional time for the brand. In a conference call discussing first-quarter results, Emanuel Chirico, chairman and chief executive officer of PVH Corp., which owns Hilfiger, said he saw softness in the U.S. Hilfiger business, where a strong U.S. dollar negatively impacted international tourist spending and spending in Hilfiger’s U.S. stores.

As reported, for the first quarter ended May 3, Hilfiger’s revenues declined 11.1 percent to $767.1 million from $862.4 million, while adding just 0.7 percent at constant currency. Earnings before interest and taxes at Hilfiger decreased 20.1 percent to $92.1 million from $115.2 million. North American revenues at Hilfiger fell 2.4 percent to $353.9 million.

Moving into the second quarter, Chirico said he saw significant improvement in Hilfiger’s sales trends. He noted that retail comp stores at Hilfiger accelerated in the second quarter with international comps increasing mid-single digits and North American comp store sales up low single digits. At wholesale, the Tommy European business continues to outperform the competition, he added.

Born and raised in Hyattsville, Maryland

How discovered:
It’s always been a dream to model so my last year of college I took a road trip to Miami and walked into every agency I could think of!

Favorite things:
I was a HUGE beach bum when I lived in Miami so I’m always first in line for a beach trip. I love to travel as much as possible, play video games on my days off and spend time with my dog.

Favorite music, band:
I love a lot of different genres of music so this is always so hard to answer; I will listen to anything from trap music to neo soul. Lately, I’ve been listening to PartyNextDoor, Michael Jackson, Sade, Drake, Erykah Badu and Incubus.

Favorite movie, tv show:
Game of Thrones is my ultimate life addiction as far as TV series but I can watch Transformers, Finding Nemo or Harry Potter any time and be completely happy.

Favorite designer, fragrance or beauty product:
I am a little all over the place as far as which designers I’m obsessed with but my fragrance will always be Flower by Kenzo. I’ve worn that since I was in middle school and it doesn’t get old.

What would you be doing if you weren’t modeling?
Before I became a model I worked for the Navy and was offered my position after college, which I would have loved to accept but modeling was calling my name. I have so many things I want to do during my modeling career and after I can’t keep up. All I know is that I want to give back to the world in anyway whether it be working with our youth, helping animals or just trying to persevere nature.

What’s something uncool that you love anyway?
I am a huge World of Warcraft and Diablo fan which is where the WoW comes from in my IG name =)

Favorite modeling experience so far?
I got an amazing opportunity to shoot in the Maldives for Otto riding a horse through the beautiful Indian Ocean. It was epic. I think the most publicity I’ve gotten was walking for Project Runways season finale during fashion week last summer where I met Zac Posen, Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn. And of course, my casting call for Sports Illustrated!

What’s the best thing about your hometown/country?
The best thing about my hometown are the crabs!!! I would die for a crab cake or blue crabs with ole bay and a ice cold beer… Delicious!

Which brand would you really love to model for?
I would love love love to work with Sports Illustrated

Place you would love to visit:
I would love to visit Egypt, I’ve always been infatuated with their culture, art and architecture.

Currently you’re obsessed with/about:
I just made a huge move from Miami to New York so honestly I’ve been focusing on getting my apartment situated. Shopping for furniture and decorating is super exciting and I can’t wait to see what it’s going to look like once I’ve put everything in its place. Some days I’m completely over it but for the most part it’s been fun.

Eidos creative director Antonio Ciongoli channeled Marni chief executive officer Gianni Castiglioni’s vacation home in Spain’s Formentera as inspiration for the brand’s spring collection. Although the house is on an island, the terrain is very desertlike, which influenced Ciongoli’s fabric choices and color palette. Washed-out colors of beiges and light grays to whites were used in traditional tailored clothing as well as sportswear pieces such as bombers, pajamalike shirts and knits.

One standout was a robelike sweater in an ancient Indian batik that was also used on a swim trunk and espadrilles.

Perhaps the strongest marriage of Neopolitan tailoring and the bohemian Spanish lifestyle was seen in a linen and silk double-breasted suit in a full silhouette with a higher rise — perfect for those lazy summer nights.

One can always expect a youthful vibe from Timo Weiland, and the spring collection didn’t stray too far from the oeuvre of designers Timo Weiland, Donna Kang and Alan Eckstein.

“I love you more than being 17″ — a lyric from The Strokes song “Evening Sun” — informed the collection and presentation, which featured too-cool-for-school models standing in front of static TVs.

“It’s all about summer in the city. The TV is on, but no one is watching,” Weiland said. This static print was translated onto intarsia sweaters, which were styled with either a trouser short or a wide-leg pant with a slight flare. “Our customer works in a variety of industries so we didn’t want it to have too much volume,” he said.

For outerwear, the designers updated classic jacket silhouettes from the Fifties with elevated fabrics including a silk, pin-striped bomber jacket, a white Japanese denim jacket with a contrasting collar and a suede baseball jacket.

Although there’s an endearing charm that comes across in the boyish styling, it sometimes reduces the stronger pieces.

Nick Graham showcased an array of tailored clothing options that captured the spirit of the world traveler for his spring presentation titled, “Everywhere.”

“These pieces can be worn from London to Paris to Miami,” said Graham.

The offering featured both a cropped and longer modern fit in a single-breasted construction, in variations of cotton and linen blends in a variety of playful mixtures such as microchecks, stripes and solid pastels. These were often paired with unexpected floral shirts and striped ties, giving the line a younger feel.

A standout was a black floral-printed tuxedo in a slim fit.

Although this was Graham’s first time designing tailored clothing, the solid effort encapsulated his signature witty take on men’s apparel.
