If timing is everything, then pre-fall boils down to two things: hitting the store in May and staying there until September. The transitional nature of the season prompted Bottega Veneta’s Tomas Maier to focus on light fabrics that fall into the buy- and wear-now category. He came up with an abundance of double-faced wool and cashmere styles to satisfy the summer temps while stoking desire for upcoming fall inventory. “I see it as a continuation of our last runway,” said Maier. “It’s almost moving along, an evolution.” No matter which direction the house evolves toward, it will always include leather, which Maier showed on head-to-toe monochromatic looks. The treatment was ultralight, a crinkled, dipped patent that had the texture of paper. It appeared in brown, slate and black on shirts, a jacket and full skirts that fell just above the ankle. To accessorize, there were classic loafers and Intrecciato versions of what Maier called “belt bags” but some might identify as a fanny pack.
